Twelve months goes quickly at Whitburn Church of England Academy; Year 11 have completed their GCSE examinations and it is nearly the end of term! As has become a tradition, it is now time for our annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) day on Thursday 2nd July. As is usual, it is the exhilarating mix of learning and fun for our pupils.
Pupils should wear normal school uniform and the timing of the day remains the same. However, this year the format is a little different to previously, with all pupils taking part in all activities across the faculties. The ‘menu’ of activities for our pupils is:
- Bridge building with the Maths and Computing Faculty – how many Mars Bars can your bridge carry?
- Spaghetti and marshmallows towers with the Humanities Faculty – how tall can you make your tower before it collapses? What will the pupils do with all the leftover marshmallows?
- Egg parachutes with the Languages Faculty – can you drop an egg from the first floor balcony without it breaking? (Health and safety has been reviewed for this activity!)
- Solar Rover with the Science and Technology Faculty – how far can you transport Mr Newton’s apples?
The finale for the day will be a whole school gathering in the Septimus Hall. We will be awarding prizes for the winners from the day, followed by a STEM themed quiz for staff and pupils culminating in a battle with gravity on the climbing wall!
We are sure the day will be most enjoyable for all pupils. If you have any queries regarding the day please do not hesitate to contact the Main Academy Office.
All parents and carers are welcome to attend.
